Bill started as a research assistant in late 1975. He lived in a flat above Marks and Spencer (73 Murraygate, Dundee). He had an allotment and helped someone out with their garden. In 1976 the Mad Ramblers had their first 'real' walk (Lairig Ghru, 3 days), after a training walk in May (?) on Tryfan. These were also my first real walks in the mountains. I met up with Bill in Dundee for a couple of days after the Lairig walk. I remember I tried (unwisely) to attract his attention in the city centre by stepping out onto a pedestrian crossing….. he did manage to stop! Bill registered to do an MSc, but found it difficult to get sufficient support from his supervisor. Cumbernauld
